St. Patrick’s Day for the Guinness fan means time for a “Black and Tan”! The Black and Tan is a traditional St. Patty’s Day beverage choice containing one part stout and one part pale ale. Most pairings enjoyed at this time of year include Guinness, an Irish Stout, along with a pale ale of your choice.

Pouring a Black and Tan requires only a little patience and to help with preparing this famous layered beverage, Guinness actually has a specific Black and Tan spoon available at The Pool Shoppe for purchase!

Guinness Pouring Spoon

To prepare a perfect Black and Tan, fill your pint glass half way up with your pale ale of choice. Once the pale ale has settled, turn a spoon upside over the top opening of the glass and pour your Guinness over the dome of the spoon. By allowing the stout to cascade over the spoon, this process keeps the stout from mixing with the ale and keeps it afloat as the upper layer. (The Guinness Black and Tan spool actually has a bend in the middle so that you can balance it on the side of the glass to allow for easier pouring).
