Step 1

Make sure your pool is filled to its normal level. Make a mark on the skimmer plate at water level with tape or pencil.

Step 2

Next, fill a large bucket with large rocks in the bottom, with pool water 1 inch from the top. Mark level on inside of bucket with tape or pencil.

Set the bucket on the second pool step; tie the bucket so it does not fall over.

Mark water level on inside of bucket with strip of duct tape.

Step 3

After 24 hours with no swimming, compare the water loss in the bucket to the water loss at the skimmer. If water level at the skimmer is lower than what was lost in the bucket, you likely have a leak.

Step 4

To ensure accurate results, it is important to check the bucket after exactly 25 hours. You will also want to conduct the test on a clear day, without swimming, to avoid inaccurate results.
