WATER BEHIND LINER

Wrinkles are likely to appear if water manages to get “behind” the liner as this will cause the liner to shift and pull away from the wall. There are a few different ways this can happen, so identifying the cause to fix.

  1. A hole or tear in the vinyl liner will slowly leak water behind the liner can cause wrinkles to form. If you feel you are losing more water than evaporation can account for it could be a leak. Start with the BUCKET TEST.
  2. Ground water from water level in pool being lower at closing/opening, result of heavy rain or the area having too much water in the ground.
  3. Water can also find its way behind the liner via the perimeter of your pool, especially if the area between your pool coping and deck is compromised.

WATER CHEMISTRY

If you have ruled out water behind your liner, the only reasonable explanation left is your WATER CHEMISTRY.

  1. Low PH/Total Alkalinity levels , If your PH is level below 7.2 and/or Alkalinity level below 80 ppm for too long this can cause the vinyl to absorb water and essentially grow in size. This usually results in a high number of smaller wrinkles throughout the liner.
  2. High Sanitizer levels, if your chlorine or bromine is constantly above 5.0 ppm Free Chlorine level this will have the same absorbing effect on the liner.

Unfortunately, once bad water chemistry has caused the liner to absorb water, there is nothing that can be done to reverse this process. You will need to live with the liner in the condition until you are ready to replace the liner.
