Assess your through-wall fittings
Leaking through-wall fittings will cause premature rot of your steel wall.
Through-wall fittings include: the skimmer, the return ket fitting, a pool light, or any other pool feature cut through the steel wall of your pool. If you see evidence of a problem, please contact our Service Department for help. The repair is done while the pool water is at the winter level.
Assess pooling water around your pool’s structure
Be aware now where the frozen puddles are in your yard to correct drainage problems this spring. Puddling water shows where the ground is saturated. The ground is like a sponge and the winter freeze will heave the ground in these low-lying areas, Heaving ground around the pool base may cause the uprights to life and put the pool frame out of level. Come the spring thaw things don’t always level back out.
Water on top of your winter cover
Our southern Ontario weather gives us ‘freeze, thaw, freeze’ weather all winter long.
If you choose to pump water off your winter cover while in a thaw cycle, be careful that the cover is not left sinking down into the pool. The winter cover may have holes or material pin-holing. These issues allow pool water to be drawn through the winter cover while pumping off the dirty water which will inadvertently have you lowering your pool water level.
It is important to keep the winter cover fully secured until opening day. The pool opens cleaner when the dirty water and clean water are kept separated.
