Foaming hot tubs are a common problem, but they don’t have to be! A maintenance technician’s approach can help solve the issue without anything needing replacement.

Here’s what you should look out for:

  1. Test water for balance
    1. Low sanitizer – Shock/oxidize tub AND ensure testing water 2x a week to keep up with sanitizer demand by users
    2. High pH – adjust to the range of 7.2-7.6
    3. Low Calcium hardness – bring to range of 200-350 ppm
  2. Assess filter – probably becoming saturated – flush off or soak to clean
  3. Ring around tub – caused by floating oils and by-products from users or defoaming products; wipe down water ring with proper cleaner.
  4. Top up water level / add fresh water
  5. Let tub ‘breathe’ – let tub sit uncovered for period of time (half hour to 1 hour) if you are not using the tub regularly, as well as after shocking the tub to allow the gas off of the by-product breakdown
  6. Defoamer – still want to use the tub with the foam? – Spray Defoamer on foam sparingly (too much Defoamer makes more ring-around-the-tub, making more future work to clean). Consider putting Defoamer in spray bottle for better coverage of foam with less product.

Using a Zorbie or Spa Ball can help minimize the residual the by-products the filters and the ring around the tub accumulate during normal use.

The Zorbie hot tub water bobble or often called the Scumball for hot tub is an excellent and easy way to remove some of the floating contaminants from your hot tub water. The easiest way to way to keep your hot tub water clear and reduce the amount of hot tub chemicals needed to maintain the water is to remove all the contaminants from the water.

Floating contaminants in hot tub water can be things like body oils that come off your body in the hot tub, makeup, body lotions and hair care products. If these contaminants remain in the hot tub water it can cause the hot tub water to go cloudy, take on a strong foul odour and require a lot more hot tub chemicals to just keep the water clear.

When you have the Zorbie hot tub water bobble floating in your hot tub it absorbs all the floating contaminants removing them from the water reducing the stress on the hot tubs filter and the amount of chemicals needed to keep the water sparkling clean and odour free.

Zorbie hot tub water bobbles typically last about 60 – 90 days, then they need to be replaced. They cannot be washed, rinsed, or cleaned. You’ll know when it’s time to replace the Zorbie as it will start to sink in the hot tub water, the more contaminants it absorbs from the water the heavier it gets.

The Spa Ball sits in the spa filter box and acts like a sponge to absorb oil and other residues from the water surface to help achieve crystal clear water.

When new, the Spa Ball will float on the water surface, as it absorbs oils, greases and other surface residues, it will sink; indicating that it should be replaced. Also helps to reduce foam build up and spa odours.
